Friday Five – National Influenza Vaccination Week
Follow and join the conversation with #Fightflu, #flu, #NIVW and #FluView.
Next week is National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW), an annual observance in December to remind everyone 6 months and older that there’s still time to get vaccinated against flu. This week’s Friday Five provides information about this year’s flu season and a newly approved vaccine option, tracks the parts of the U.S. where activity is high, and offers some tips and resources for how to prevent and treat the illness.
FDA Approves First At-Home Nasal Flu Vaccine
The FDA approved FluMist, a nasal spray flu vaccine that you or a caregiver can now give at home – no health care provider needed. It’s the first flu vaccine of its kind, offering a needle-free option that’s both simple and convenient, and its maker hopes it will improve access and uptake.
Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report
Seasonal influenza activity continues to increase in most parts of the country, most notably in the South Central, Southeast, Mountain, and West Coast regions. Find out the latest data with CDC’s Flu View, a weekly surveillance report prepared by the influenza Division.
This week’s #FluView includes the second seasonal flu-related death in a child occurring during the 2024-2025 season. Flu vaccination can be lifesaving in children. Full #FluView here: https://t.co/52C7dCe3fO pic.twitter.com/qC2Z1j8Uz0

Planning for the Tripledemic: 3 Preparations Hospital Emergency Rooms Must Make Before the Holiday Rush
The holiday rush is nothing new for hospital emergency rooms—and as winter quickly approaches, many of these critical medical facilities are proactively planning to sidestep the chaos that an influx in patient volume can bring. But hospital emergency departments don’t just have colds and flu to worry about this season: a looming “tripledemic” of influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19 could rattle hospitals to its core, disrupting staff and continuity of patient care even more than usual.
